Souji is a reclusive loner who displays high levels of maturity. He always acts politely when first encountering future members of Kanji’s Dungeon Investigation Team, maintaining friendships even once inside.
His move names also reflect this theme, such as Gan Kun Yi and Shiden Issen for lightning attacks. Notably, “sou” serves as an expression of admiration.
Characteristics
While Westerners might find it indecorous to question a superior, such as one’s boss or professor, for reasons unrelated to politeness, in Japanese such an inquiry can actually be seen as polite owing to naze or nande? being used similarly as doushite (to express confusion).
Politeness dictates that one address their peers of the same gender by first name only and third or last name only with those of opposite genders. Being on first name basis implies a deeper level of intimacy than what might be gained through acquaintanceship or school classes.
Ojiisan or Obaasan, which translates to Gramps and Granny respectively, are common names given to Japanese adults for their grandparents. Furthermore, the term ohashi may also be used as an equivalent way to address older people.
Personality
Yu is a confident and mature character who also boasts a dry sense of humor. While his jokes might cause offense in other situations, Yu always does it without any malice in mind – such as admitting to Saki and Teddie that they’re partially annoying! He understands friendship well too – something which was demonstrated when he told them this.
Yu was initially cold and distant before awakening his Persona; since then however he has shown to value his relationships with friends, going above and beyond in caring for them. Additionally he’s become goofier as evidenced by participation in group date cafes or acting like a sukeban during Miss Yasogami Beauty Pageant; his Persona abilities include Swift Strike and Ziodyne while Izanagi’s following hand technique allows him to zone effectively during battle; in English this attack is known as Zio.
Relationships with other characters
Queen Sonsaku trusts Kazuto with her intelligence and advice; he has pledged his allegiance for their task together until their mission is completed. Kazuto can provide comforting company for Queen when she feels overwhelmed; Kakoton can sometimes become harsh. Kazuto provides comforting company for Queen when needed and shouldered responsibility.
Shuri and Daikyo became close due to their shared interests in books and learning, and she quickly became Shuyu’s most beloved disciple – as with Daikyo she too is hermaphrodite.
Charm is enough to get even the stoic members of her Investigation squad teasing her, while she manages to win herself an Investigation squad partner: Nanako is the only member not tease Kazuto much to Rinrin’s displeasure; instead she takes an immediate liking to Kazuto and treats him like her own big brother – this aspect of the story highlights how there are people out there willing to stand up for those who cannot protect themselves themselves.
Background
Soujiyi has an innate understanding of independence and dissociation; yet at the same time appreciates the importance of building bonds with others. He strives to form these relationships, caring deeply about Nanako during tournament days as evidenced by his willingness to protect her during competition. In addition, his knowledge of loneliness helps him maintain friendships even after moving away from Inaba.
